The Dubai Scoliosis Program

What is Scoliosis?
About the Condition
Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by a sideways curvature of the spine. When viewed from behind, a healthy spine appears straight. However, a spine affected by scoliosis may have an S or C-shaped curve.

Types of Scoliosis
About the Condition
While there are several types of scoliosis, the most common form is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS).
AIS accounts for approximately 80% of all scoliosis cases. It typically develops between the ages of 10 and 18, during periods of rapid growth. The term "idiopathic" means the exact cause is unknown, though there appears to be a genetic component in some cases.

Natural History of Scoliosis
About the Condition
The progression of scoliosis varies from person to person. Factors that influence progression include:
- Age: Younger patients have a higher risk of curve progression.
- Gender: Girls are more likely to have progressive curves than boys.
- Curve size: Larger curves are more likely to progress.
Most mild cases of AIS do not require treatment beyond monitoring. However, more severe cases may require intervention to prevent progression and potential health complications.
